The Evolving Role of SHEQ Professionals

The Evolving Role of SHEQ Professionals

The role of safety and health professionals has grown over the years to reflect a massive change in business practice. SHEQ professionals are now required to have a 360 degrees overview of the organisation in their Safety, Health, Environmental, Quality roles, and sometimes even a Facilities Management role.

Today’s modern SHEQ professionals face frequent challenges and pressures from employers, management, workers, customers and contractors. As SHEQ requirements and legislation evolve in an ever-changing business landscape, so does the multi-tasking role of the SHEQ professional.

Traditionally, the health and safety worker was involved in the identification of safety hazards and health risks across the organisation. The main tasks were to produce policy documents, carry assessments, and implement systems to ensure everyone is safe at work.

All responsibilities for health and safety fell on the person hired to do the job, and these activities were often executed in silos per activity or department (for example, safety procedures executed on the factory floor).

Fast-forward to the modern safety professional who has grown to undertake additional roles such as risk management, financial risk, quality, security, facilities, business continuity, people engagement, wellbeing, environmental sustainability and ethical practices.

SHEQX’s solution transforms your company’s data into rich visuals for you to collect and organise, so you can focus on what matters to you. Stay in the know, spot trends as they happen and push your business further.

The SHEQ professional is no longer just the health and safety regulations enforcer in the enterprise. The SHEQ professional’s role involves the long-term physical and mental health safety and wellbeing of the people who engage with the organisation.

The SHEQ role has transformed to include data analysis, decision-making, consulting and advisory tasks. The responsibilities extend to all stakeholders who need to uphold safety requirements, health standards and ethical business practices.

As the complexity and the responsibilities of the role increase, the SHEQ professional is no longer the ‘go-to’ health and safety personnel in the company. Safety, Health, Environmental, and Quality becomes a vital function of the enterprise that requires multi-skills and the ability to multi-task and connect data across various business operations.

The SHEQ professional has an important role in the connected enterprise to share the information across teams and departments, upskill staff, managers and supervisors, perform risk assessment, review safety procedures, analyse and report on relevant KPIs, as well as enforce compliance with the latest global regulations and legislation.

SHEQ professionals are also getting involved in safety and health auditing and bringing external relevant expert advice where required. The role is now highly collaborative with the goal of sharing the workload and improving the overall safety culture, with everybody taking responsibility in this important role.

The SHEQ professional’s role is ultimately creating and enforcing a sustainable business model and company culture that focuses on stability, standardised operations, and best safety practices in the organisation.
